Transfer switches or Automatic Transfer Switches ATS allow an electrical load to be transferred between two sources. In many instances this is between the utility and a standby generator if power ceases. Some transfer switches are manual which requires an operator to manually “throw” the switch while others are automatic whereby the switch will sense a power outage and automatically throw itself.
Other types of automatic transfer switches are open or closed transition; service entrance rated or bypasses isolation. The choice of the transfer switch or switchgear is dependent upon the application for which the standby generator is designed.
