For a Data Center, It’s Not ‘If’ They Lose Power, It’s ‘When’
CyberLynk, a local full-service internet service provider and data center in Franklin, WI, has gone through many upgrades throughout the years. And when the business expands, so does the need for backup power solutions.
CyberLynk and Wolter’s Power Systems Group began their loyal partnership over 10 years ago when installing their first series of Generac standby generators. At that time, each server room required a dedicated 150 kW natural gas generator. The sole purpose of these generators was to step in when the energy company failed—which occurred 5-6 times per year.
During these outages, power would be lost anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours. For data centers, any loss of power can be detrimental to their work.
However, the UPS system and Generators must step in to supply power not only for the servers but for the air conditioning and lights, as well. For CyberLynk, each of these components is deemed essential for their business operations.
Wolter not only provided CyberLynk with standby generators but also understood the critical nature of their business and developed a customized maintenance schedule to ensure each generator would provide its maximum performance throughout the years. Should something not go as planned, Wolter is prepared to be onsite within minutes for emergency repair.
Fast-forward to today. CyberLynk's business is booming, and they are expanding once again. This time Adam Hobach, President of CyberLynk was more aggressive in their plans. “This time I wanted a longer-term solution and Jason Lelewicz from Wolter, helped develop a plan that would support larger expansions and additional backup,” said Mr. Hobach. “We purchased a diesel Generac generator with 600 kW of power. Not only will it provide power to the newly expanded area, but it will also serve as a backup to the backup.”
Today’s expansion involved preplanning for the future in a big way. The concrete slab was poured large enough to install two 600 kW Generac generators, even though only one is needed today.
“Expansion to a second 600 kW diesel generator remains planned down the road,” Mr. Hobach continued. “It’s vital for CyberLynk to be proactive so if down the road comes sooner than expected, we’ll be ready with Wolter at our side.”
