Things to Consider When Purchasing a Used Forklift
So you’re thinking about buying a used forklift?
Purchasing used could be a great decision, or it could be your worst nightmare. When buying a used truck, it is important that you are buying a truck with all the safety features supplied by the factory as standard equipment is operational.
If you do have a truck where one or more of the safety items are disconnected, removed or by passed, you could be subject to OSHA violations. Some of the features which may vary by manufacturer are but not limited to: load safety rack, overhead guard, back up alarm, operator’s presence system, seat belt and directional control with a neutral safety switch.
When buying a truck from sources other than reputable dealers, there are no guarantees that the truck is up to the OSHA requirements. If you’re purchasing from a reputable dealer, you’re probably getting a forklift that will last awhile and run well. However, if you can’t purchase from a reputable dealer, know that you’re taking a risk.
Just like purchasing a used car, you always want to have a mechanic inspect a used forklift before you purchase. It’s not just the transmission and mast that should be inspected. Make sure you’ve inspected the seat belt, horn and the lights as well.
